Here's to Resolution and Growth! Progress Over Perfection!

Hello! Who is ready for 2017? I read a great quote the other day. "Don't stress so much about settling on a path for 2017. The division of time into years is a human invention, and fact is every moment of every day is another opportunity for resolution and growth. So when the fireworks fly, relax and enjoy the moment, the rest will come to you." -Beau Taplin

Doesn't that quote make you breathe a little easier? I have talked with so many of you and I feel like we are all in the same boat. At this point in time, it literally, takes all we've got to eat healthy and to exercise. Some of us are "restarting" our healthy habits now, and, some of us are waiting for the New Year. The end of the year is tough to stay on track in taking care of ourselves and the best thing we can do is give ourselves a big pat on the back when we TRY.

Because we all have common goals of change for the better, let's start the New Year with this thought: To make change, serious change in our lives, we have to put ourselves first. You've probably heard a flight attendant say to mothers and fathers on airplanes, "In the event of an emergency, you need to put the oxygen mask on first, then on your child." What good are you to your children or to anyone else in your life unless you do that? Same idea applies here. In putting yourself first, you can make a dent in reducing stress and heal patterns that created it. So, whether it's today or January 1st, lets start by practicing self care. Come RIDE with us! Come ROCK with us! Our Cycle614 Family and Fitness Community will love and support you through your journey so that you can leave feeling completely REJUVENATED to be the best version of yourself, you can be! After all, we are in this life together for a reason! We need to remind each other progress over perfection!

Here's to peace of mind, peace in the heart, and peace of soul brought by much love and laughter now and in 2017! It is my hope that my messages in my blog in 2017 will deliver nourishment for your soul. I look forward to seeing your sweet, sweaty faces and in meeting your family and friends!

Warmly,

Demi

CHRISTMAS IN JULY-Cycle614 Fitness Community Giving-THE STAR HOUSE

Dear Fitness Community,

As we celebrate CHRISTMAS IN JULY (FUN!) at our studio, I am going to ask for your help to serve our community.

I was absolutely appalled to find out that there are an estimated 1500 homeless youths ages 14-24, in Central Ohio. These kids live directly on the streets or in an abandoned building. Most are disconnected from their families and are all under-served by our community, left to fend for themselves. These kids are at high risk for human trafficking, HIV, Hepatitis C infections, and victimization. Well, isn't it time we do something to help!

The STAR HOUSE is a 24/7 drop-in shelter where kids can get food, hygiene items, blankets, tents and other items to help them survive on the streets. They have served over 1000 homeless youths who have visited the shelter almost 20,000 times. These are the High Priority Needs at the STAR HOUSE: Tents/Tarps; Backpacks, Blankets, Toothpaste and Toothbrushes, Towels and Wash cloths, Bike Locks (metal preferred) and Soap. If you bring in several of these items (let's be real!) or give a $15 donation, we will be happy to put a free ride into your account.

Let's come together as a FITNESS COMMUNITY and put some goodness in the world! After all, there are a lot of good people around (I've gotten to know you!)! Thank you everyone for being so great! Much love to all!

Warmly,

Demi

"Life Is made up of one decision at a time"-Mark Placenti

This week I got back on track and guess what?! I messed up. I try to remind myself that I am a work in progress. I need to remind myself that over and over again (sigh). There are times we mess up. It may be a day, a week or even an entire month. It happens and it's okay. We need to forgive ourselves and start over. We need to just get up and leave unhealthy habits behind us. Every. Single. Day. "Life is made up of one decision at a time" so this week let's together eliminate what doesn't help us evolve. We've got this!

Have a great week! Can't wait to see you on the bikes!

Warmly,

Demi

DEMI'S TIP OF THE WEEK-GIVE UP THE POP (Diet Soda aka Diet Poison)

So, I'm going to start this blog off with a quick story. This past summer I went to the Drive-In movies (yes, the Drive-In-haha) with some friends. We packed our snacks and our adult beverages and got all set up outside our car. Next thing I know, up pulls a car directly next to us, smoke pouring out the windows, and three little kids getting out of the car (all under the age of 10). Much to my dismay, a child who is approximately six years old pops open a 2-liter of Mountain Dew and starts chugging it. My best friend looks at me and says, "This is your worst nightmare, isn't it?" I couldn't even laugh as it truly was. As I grow older, I try to be LESS judgmental each day. I try...so hard. However, a girl's got her limits. Especially, when it comes to children who are unable to make good choices for themselves. These children were at a Rated R movie, with smoke filled lungs who are pouring liquid poison into their bodies all due to their parents poor choices. Bah.

Here's my advice-Do your best to put that soda down. Try to stop your loved ones from drinking it. Take action and throw it away and don't buy it anymore. Try to retrain your brain, your taste buds, your bad habit. My goal is for all of us to live happy, healthy lives.

I have read a large amount of studies, articles, journals, etc. regarding how bad soda is for our health. Almost all of the science link the consumption of diet soda to weight gain, higher BMI and a bunch of other health problems. Let me reiterate-Diet Pop=Weight gain. Labeling stuff "Diet" is such a bad trick. We all probably know that…right? Maybe that info isn't quite enough to cut it out because we workout and eat clean otherwise…right?  Well,  here’s some more super news. According to Noelle Larson, MD, at the Walter Reed Army Medical Center, diet soda leaches calcium from our bodies. Over the course of two days, Larson had 20 healthy Young women drink 24 ounces of diet soda while the control group drank only water. After three hours , Larson analyzed the women’s’ urine: The diet soda group lost on average 6.85 milligrams more calcium and 41 milligrams more phosphorous than the water control group. Ok. Super-just super. Diet pop sucks the calcium and phosphorus out of our bones. If that’s not enough to make us stop here’s some more news. Soda is horrible for us. HORRIBLE! You and I both can live without the "fizz!" It causes headaches, mood swings, dizziness, and memory loss.  If you think that’s bad, Sharon Fowler, MPH, a researcher at the University of Texas Health Center at San Antonio, found some real danger long-term effects of drinking the artificial sugar substitute. Studies have linked high intake of aspartame to developing lymphoma, leukemia, cancerous tumors of the liver and peripheral nerves and nerve cell death within the brain.  Huh? To me-it sounds like diet soda causes cancer and potentially alzheimers. Cancer? Alzheimers? Really? Is that sucky or what?! Last but not least lets chat about metabolic syndrome. According to studies, drinking diet soda increases the risk of developing metabolic syndrome by 34 percent. Metabolic syndrome is a group of symptoms that includes extra weight around the midsection, elevated insulin levels, and increased blood pressure. In other words, if you drink diet soda you are at a greater risk of diabetes, heart disease, and other illnesses. 34 percent people–that’s a high percentage. I think about child obesity all the time and these kids who have lived on soda all of their lives.

I believe that life is about taking care of each other. So, let me take care of you-My goal this week is to encourage you give this crap up. Drink Spark. Drink Coffee. Drink tea. Drink WATER and lots of it!

As always, if you have any questions, concerns, or suggestions, kindly let me know. I am so grateful for your great energy everyday you walk into Cycle614. I hope you all have an AMAZING week!

Warmly (literally-the weather is awesome! Amen.),

DEMI'S TIP OF THE WEEK-OVERFLOW PARKING

Hey guys! At Cycle614, we are about making your experience with us the best it can be. In that regard, I want to make sure that you don't get towed during your ride as that would be a total bummer.

In that regard, I am sending out a quick reminder not to park at Firestone at any time. He has threatened towing whether he is opened or closed and we would HATE that to happen to you. Also, please make sure that you don't park directly behind the apartment complex beside our studio (they have a rocky lot). They too, will tow you without notice.

Please let us know if you have any questions. In the meantime, if our lot is full, during the morning you can take advantage of the Donatos lot and/or street parking (including but not limited to Chesapeake Ave.). After 5:00 p.m. you can use our awesome ally neighbors lots (down the ally on the left past apartment lot).

As always, if you have any concerns, kindly let me know. I hope everyone has a great week! I hope to see you soon!

Warmly,

Demi

DEMI'S TIP OF THE WEEK-CHALLENGE YOURSELF DURING PTP

So, you are in class warmed up, and your instructor puts on an inspiring, bad ass song and says to you, "For next 3 minutes, I want you to work as hard as you can in the saddle with as much resistance as you can trying to keep a strong cadence because we are going to do our PTP test." We believe at Cycle614 that your ride is about what you want to give! I want to invite you this week to challenge yourself during the PTP "test" and to try your hardest during these three minutes. It will make a difference in your ride!

What is PTP? PTP stands for Personal Threshold Power. At Cycle614 we wanted to supply you with the best technology out there and this is it! In only three minutes, this tool gives you the knowledge of your personal sustainable power wattage. Once the three minutes are up, our system creates five power zones in five different colors. The system calculates PTP as 90% of the highest sustainable power each rider can sustain for the length of the three minute test.

I've had several people come to me and say..."Some people stand up during PTP...aren't we supposed to stay in the saddle?" If you have been around since the beginning of Cycle614, we did just that. We stayed in the saddle for PTP. Well, my friends, we have grown. Cycle614 has evolved. So, my advice to you is this...Listen to your instructor. He or she has planned an AMAZING ride for you. They have put hours into your ride (trust me on this...Your ride means a lot to us!) We don't believe in living in the box. We don't believe that there is a box. We love to switch things up, keep things fresh, and to challenge you! Lucky for us, our technology allows us to do just that! An instructor may even ask you to do your three minute PTP test all in position one. Or all in position three....whaa??? or a mixture of position one and three..It completely depends on the ride that they have planned for you and each instructor may ask you to do something just a little different depending on how they are going to use the PTP screens. So, listen to your instructor, stay focused and just do your best! It's going to be a great ride!

If you should have any questions or concerns, as always, I am here for you! Best wishes for a wonderful week!

Warmly,

Demi
